THE SOFTENING HAS AFFECTED THE BIGGER SIZE SEGMENTS; SMALLER ONES STILL APPEAR TO BE VERY STABLE - INTERMODAL
After a month and a half of back to back weekly declines, the dry bulk market has finally reversed its negative course. We believe that there should be some level of resistance for the BDI around the 1,500 points level. This week will be crucial to see as to how strong that resistance might be as we have already witnessed small index declines both yesterday and today. The softening has affected the bigger size segments, while the smaller ones still appear to be very stable, holding on to the gains realized since the end of the summer season. The latter is a hopeful sign that the market has somewhat stabilized but the amount of excitement felt up until recently, is admittedly not there anymore.
Rates for Capes improved this past week, witnessing some better positional numbers in both basins, with tighter tonnage lists in North Atlanic allowing for rates to hold their levels in the region. While the average rate for the segment has moved back to over 19,000/day, Q1 2014 FFAs are considerably lower, at around $ 9,600/day.
The Atlantic Panamax market continued to see firm numbers for both trans-Atlantic voyages as well as fixtures ex-USG, but weak pacific demand has pushed the average rate lower, with numbers for the period market also declining.
Supras and Handies continued to climb higher with activity in the Continent and tighter tonnage lists in the USG continuing to support Supra activity, while the average rate for the segment is fast approaching the $ 14,000/ day.
