HANDY: STABLE ; PANAMAX: BUSY WEEK - FEARNRESEARCH
Handy
The Atlantic markets remain stable in this week. The USG-Feast was at USD 19k and Black Sea-Feast was at USD 12k. The Pacific market is bit firm with owners asking high numbers which is resisting chrtrs to move. Indo-India is now been fixed around USD 12k bss Singapore position. WCIChina was bit busy with cargoes like salt, grains, and iron ore, and rates were around USD 11k whereas ECI-China was quiet and rates were 6k respectively. RBCT rounds fixed at USD 9k + 300k BB. Short period rate for large eco Supra was around USD 9k.
Panamax
It has been a busy week in the Panamax market. The Atlantic is experiencing a moderate and much awaited lift. Few early ships available have pushed the market up to as much as USD 12k for vessels in good positions. Some of the credit for this stronger market must go to the ECSA grain season still going strong and continue to absorb vessels from the Atlantic and from the Pacific as well. Fronthaul now goes around USD 17.5-18k daily. We see more mixed signals in the Pacific, with some players being negative, but still the fixtures that are done are improving slowly and have now reached around USD 9-10k for rounds. The short period market has been active. A short period with delivery and redelivery in Atlantic now pay more than 10k and same for Pacific just tick below 10k.
Capesize
As we head further into Q2, everyone is hoping that Cape rates will begin to firm up, having put behind us a cyclone season in Australia, and a very poor Q1 out of Brazil (volume wise). However, the paper market suggests otherwise and the front end of the curve continues to converge toward today’s weak spot rate May and June 4TC contracts have lost USD 1200 and 900 w-o-w respectively. Chinese GDP growth figures for Q1 were slightly softer than expected at 7.7%, however it seems that the current Cape market is plagued more by oversupply and weak tonne-mile demand than Chinese industrial indicators. West Australia remains by far the most actively fixed route, however rates remain stagnant at the 7.25 PMT mark, with 10c higher being achieved for tighter positions. This week we have seen a number of big players pick up longer term period deals amidst a slightly more bearish outlook rates of around USD 14k per day for durations between 2 and 3 years have been concluded.
