COAL PEAK RECEDES INTO THE FAR DISTANCE
COALspot.com (German): Coal will be available to mankind as an energy source for the next 120 years.
The German Coal Importer Association has called attention to this fact. During a convention of the Evangelische Akademie Tutzing, the experts corrected descriptions of the reserves situation originating from the Energy Watch Group, which is associated with the Greens. The coal importers regard the statements made by this group predicting an imminent decline in world production to be misleading as they are in part wrong and ideologically based .
The time period of 120 years for profitably minable coal reserves is based on figures from the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR ). These figures show that hard coal will be a vailable for a significantly longer time than oil or natural gas. Moreover, coal is the primary energy source with the fastest growth rate in consumption.
It will cover a major part of energy demand until 2030, above all in Asian countries.
According to forecasts by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the world population will grow by 1.4 billion to over eight billion within the next 20 years. This translates into growth of the world population each year by a figure corresponding approximately to the total population of Germany.
At the same time, energy consumption will grow over proportionately by 30%.
If this demand is to be met, all of the forms of energy must be utilised. Despite the massive increase in renewable energy sources, the fossil energy sources coal, oil and gas will cover 75% of the additional consumption up to the year 2030. Against this back drop, the development of the CCS technology (carbo n - capture - storage) clearly proves to be important; without it, any improvement in the climate will be very expensive.
The new technology represents greater export opportunities, especially for Germany, than the comparatively simple technologies of wind or solar energy, which are more easily copied and are already being imitated in other countries.
