RICHARDS BAY COAL SHIPMENTS FELL 11% IN NOVEMBER FROM YEAR AGO
 Coal exports from South Africa’s Richards Bay, site of the continent’s largest export terminal for the fuel, fell 11 percent in November from a year ago when the average price of the fuel was more than a quarter higher.
Shipments fell to 5.64 million metric tons in November from 6.37 million tons a year earlier, according to data posted on the terminal’s Web site today. The terminal exported 6.75 million tons in October.
The terminal is the biggest exporter of power plant coal to Europe and is owned by South Africa’s largest coal exporters, including BHP Billiton Ltd., Anglo American Plc and Xstrata Plc.
At its November shipment rate, the Richards Bay terminal will export 60.6 million tons of coal this year, compared with capacity of 76 million tons and shipments of 61.79 million tons last year.
Coal transported to the port by rail in November was 8 percent lower than the same month a year earlier, while stocks of the fuel at the end of the month were 10 percent lower than at the same point in October.
Coal shipped through the port averaged about $66.03 a ton in November, compared with $90.46 a year earlier, according to data by Hampshire-based McCloskey Group Ltd. on Bloomberg. The fuel traded at $66.90 a ton in the week ended Nov. 27.
The number of trains that arrived during November was 653 while the number of vessels loaded was 61, according to the terminal’s Web site.
