JAPAN 2010 COAL IMPORTS SEEN FLAT, INDIA'S ROBUST - INDUSTRY
* Japan's demand seen steady in 2010 at 110 mln tonnes
* India's demand seen as robust, at 70 mln tonnes
Reuters reported that, Thermal coal imports by Japan, the world's largest steam coal buyer, may be flat in 2010 on doubts over a recovery while India's imports are expected to be robust, buyers and analysts said on Thursday.
Masaru Igawa, senior manager, business development group at J-Power, said Japan's thermal coal imports in 2010 would be unchanged from this year's figure, at about 110 million tonnes, compared with about 124 million tonnes in 2008.
"We expect coal imports will be the same (as this year) because there are some factors like economy recovery," Igawa said on the sidelines of McCloskey Asia Pacific Coal Outlook Conference in Bali.
Japanese electricity wholesaler J-Power or Electric Power Development Co is Japan's biggest coal user.
The Australian Bureau for Agriculture and Resource Economics (ABARE) in its September forecast said that Japan's thermal coal imports were estimated to fall 10 percent in 2009 to 115 million tonnes, and to see little growth next year because of the subdued economic environment and possible higher use of nuclear power.
Environmental issues are another factor that may affect Japan's coal imports next year, Igawa said.
Japan's prime minister, Yukio Hatoyama, has pledged to target a 25 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2020, despite opposition from industry, which says the goal will hurt the economy.
India's demand also will remain robust next year, with one major buyer forecasting that the country will import about 70 million tonnes of coal in 2010.
"India's coal import volumes have grown as large as China's and are exhibiting higher growth. Lack of infrastructure support this trend," Andreas Bokkenheuser, mining and commodities analyst at UBS, said in a research note.
ABARE has forecast India may import 42 million tonnes of coal this year. Demand from India and China helped spot prices for Australian thermal coal to recover from a near two-year low of $58.25 a tonne in late March to around $80 a tonne.
