COALspot.com (Singapore): The dry bulk market was soft this week and the BDI dropped by almost 7 pct to 2,183 points. The cape size index dropped by 11 pct to 2,677 points and charter rate dropped by US$ 4,200 this week to US$ 23,317 per day.
The cape index has been softening continuously since July 2009 and seems that there would be pressure on Cape size vessels in next coming weeks. The Panamax index softened this week and the index dropped by 10 pct to 2,317 points. The Supramax / Handy size index has been steady this week and closed at 2,058 and 960 points respectively. The charter hire end of this week was at Cape / US$ 23,317 per day, Panamax / US$ 18,593 per day, Supramax / US$ 21,514 per day and Handy size / US$ 13,529 per day.
The Supramax index in the Far East (S6 route) continued to be holding and the charter hire was at US$ 14,900 per day. The ECI / China (S7) route also firmed up by 6 pct and the charter hire was at US$ 19,613 per day. The India / Far East seems will be firm next week.
Short period rates for Supramax was around US$ 17,000 per day for vessels opening Far East / SE Asia. The futures for three years for 2010-2012 is around Cape / US$ 23,000 per day, Panamax / US$ 15,000 per day, Supramax / US$ 14,000 per day, Handy size / US$ 10,500 per day.
According to Allied Ship broking’s latest weekly report, the global order book for all ship types equals to more than 4,800 vessels, with expected deliveries from 2009 and up to 2012.
During this year, there are expected deliveries of 690 dry bulk vessels, with their numbers almost doubling at 1,273 in 2010, before dropping to 940 in 2011 and even lower at 345 in 2012.
As far as tankers are concerned, owners are expected to accept deliveries of 508 in 2009, 600 in 2010, 400 in 2011 and just 56 in 2012.
The unprecedented deliveries of this large volume is definitely likely to put pressure on charter rates says Capt. Reddy, Managing Director of Vistaar Shipping, an experienced ship operator in Singapore.
The congestion in Australia was at 112 vessels in EC Australia and 18 iron ore vessels waiting WC Australia.
The berthing delays at DBCT is almost at 24 days and New Castle at 12 days. The congestion in EC India Paradip and Visakhapatnam continues to be uncertain.
The crude prices was soft this week and Brent crude was at US$ 65 pmt per barrel and the bunker prices was around US$ 417 pmt for IFO (380 CST) prices ex Singapore.
