U.S WEEKLY COAL OUTPUT DROPS FOR THE FOURTH WEEK IN A ROW, EIA DATA SHOWS
.jpg) COALspot.com – U.S., the world’s second largest coal producers have produced approximately totalled an estimated 15.5 million short tonnes (mmst) of coal week on week (For the week ending September 16, 2017), EIA said in its latest report.
According to EIA’s latest report, this production estimate is 1.1% lower than last week's estimate and 7.2% higher than the production estimate in the comparable week in 2016.
East of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 5.7 mmst (down 3.38% week over week) and west of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 9.8 mmst (flat week over week), according to weekly figures released by the US Energy Information Agency (EIA), on September 21, 2017.
U.S. year-to-date (as of September 16, 2017) coal production totalled an estimated 563.7 mmst, 13.2% higher than the comparable year-to-date coal production in 2016.
2017 Coal Output
Production for the first eight months of 2017 is estimated to have been 528 MMst, 64 MMst (14%) higher than production for the same period in 2016. Production is expected to increase by 8% in 2017 and by 2% in 2018.
Coal production for August 2017 is estimated to have been 74 million short tons (MMst), 6 MMst (8%) higher than last August. August is also the first month that had production higher than 70 MMst since October 2015.
Coal Exports
Coal exports for the first six months of 2017 were 55% higher than exports over the same period last year. EIA expects growth in coal exports to slow in the coming months, with exports for all of 2017 forecast at 73 MMst, 21% higher than the 2016 level.
U.S. Electricity Generation from Coal
Coal's forecast generation share rises from 30% last year to 31% in 2017. The projected generation shares for natural gas and coal in 2018 average 31% and 32%, respectively.
