U.S WEEKLY COAL OUT UP 3.4% WEEK OVER WEEK TO APPROX. 17 MMST, SAYS EIA
 COALspot.com – U.S., the world’s second largest coal producers have produced approximately totalled an estimated 17 million short tonnes (mmst) of coal week on week (For the week ending August 19, 2017), EIA said in its latest report.
According to EIA’s latest report, this production estimate is 3.4% higher than last week's estimate and 12.3% higher than the production estimate in the comparable week in 2016.
East of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 6.4 mmst (up 4.91% week over week) and west of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 10.7 mmst (up 3.88% week over week), according to weekly figures released by the US Energy Information Agency (EIA), on August 24, 2017.
U.S. year-to-date (as of August 19, 2017) coal production totalled an estimated 499.3 mmst, 14.2% higher than the comparable year-to-date coal production in 2016.
2016 Coal Output
U.S. coal production is estimated to have declined by 158 million short tonnes (MMst) (18%) in 2016 to 739 MMst, which would be the lowest level since 1978. EIA expects growth in coal-fired electricity generation to contribute to a 3% increase in coal production in 2017. Coal production is expected to increase by 1% in 2018.
Coal Exports
Coal exports for the first quarter of 2017 were 58% higher than in the same quarter last year, with steam coal exports increasing by 6 million short tons (MMst). EIA expects growth in coal exports to slow in the coming months, with exports for all of 2017 forecast at 72 MMst, 11 MMst (19%) above the 2016 level. The increase in coal exports contributes to an expected 8% increase in coal production in 2017.
Coal Imports
EIA further says in its Quarterly Coal Report, the United States continued to import coal primarily from Colombia (79.7%), Canada (11.8%), and Indonesia (6.2%).
No imports were recorded from Australia for third quarter 2016.
U.S. coal imports in third quarter 2016 totalled 2.7 million short tons. The average price of U.S. coal imports during the third quarter 2016 was $62.70 per short tonne.
U.S. Electricity Generation from Coal
EIA expects the share of U.S. total utility-scale electricity generation from Coal rises from 30% in 2016 to 31% in both 2017 and 2018.
