U.S. COAL OUTPUT IS ESTIMATED TO HAVE DECLINED BY 158 MMST IN 2016 TO 739 MMST, SAYS EIA
 COALspot.com – U.S., the world’s second largest coal producers have produced approximately totalled an estimated 17 million short tons (mmst) of coal in a week (For the week ended February 4, 2017), EIA said in its latest report.
According to EIA’s latest report, this production estimate is 5.7% higher than last week's estimate and 19.1% higher than the production estimate in the comparable week in 2016.
East of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 6.8 mmst (up 6.24% week over week) and west of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 10.2 mmst (up 5.15% week over week), according to weekly figures released by the US Energy Information Agency (EIA), on February 9, 2017.
U.S. year-to-date (as of February 4, 2017) coal production totaled an estimated 79.4 mmst, 15.7% higher than the comparable year-to-date coal production in 2016.
2016 Coal Output
U.S. coal production is estimated to have declined by 158 million short tons (MMst) (18%) in 2016 to 739 MMst, which would be the lowest level since 1978. EIA expects growth in coal-fired electricity generation to contribute to a 3% increase in coal production in 2017. Coal production is expected to increase by 1% in 2018.
Coal Exports
Coal exports in November 2016 totaled 6.6 MMst, which was 35% higher than in October and 39% higher than coal exports in November 2015. Despite the monthly and year-over-year increases, EIA estimates that U.S. coal exports declined by 20% in 2016 to 59 MMst, the lowest level since 2009. Exports are expected to average 51 MMst in 2017 and 50 MMst in 2018.
Coal Imports
EIA further says in its Quarterly Coal Report, the United States continued to import coal primarily from Colombia (79.7%), Canada (11.8%), and Indonesia (6.2%).
No imports were recorded from Australia for third quarter 2016.
U.S. coal imports in third quarter 2016 totaled 2.7 million short tons. The average price of U.S. coal imports during the third quarter 2016 was $62.70 per short ton.
U.S. electricity generation
Total U.S. electricity generation from utility-scale plants averaged 11,150-gigawatt hours per day in 2016. Forecast U.S. generation declines by 0.1% in 2017, then grows by 1.5% in 2018.
