DUE TO LUNAR YEAR HOLIDAYS, THE FREIGHT MARKET STAYED WEAK
 COALspot.com: Due to Lunar year holidays and celebration, the Freight market was down in all segments this past week.
The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rose slightly this past week and ending on a negative note week over week. The BDI was down by 10.59% from the previous week and Cape Index was also down 23.04% or declined around 371 points week over week.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was reported down 10.59% week over week and ended at 827 points on 27 January 2017. The index peaked at 11,793 points in May 2008.
The Cape Index was down by 23.04 % week over week. The BCI closed 1239 points on 27 January 2017. The Panamax index (BPI) was very slightly down week over week on 27 January 2017. The Supramax index (BSI) was also declined 3.62% to 692 points on 27 January 2017, compared to 718 points on 20 January 2017.
The handy size index was also declined 4.99% and the index was closed at 419 points for the same period.
According to Vistaar India, this past week’s daily average earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India passing through Singapore was stable to weak, owners were rating at around US$ 7000-7500 per day, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 6000 per day delivery Shanghai area.
The freight rates are expected to be soft this week.
The futures for three years (2017-2020) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 11000 per day, the Panamax at US$ 8,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,500 per day and Handysize at US$ 7000 per day. No change from last week reported three years future rates.
The Brent crude oil price was closed at US$ 55.42 per barrel, almost flat week over week. The bunker prices were closed at US$ 331 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex. Singapore on 27 January 2017) slightly down week over week. Ex. Singapore bunker prices declined 4.33% year to date.
