INDONESIA'S DEMAND FOR COAL REMAINS STRONG: BP
 Indonesia's domestic demand for coal shows no sign of slowing down as the country is banking on its coal abundance to meet the country's energy demands, oil giant British Petroleum said in a report.
According to The Jakarta Globe, the Indonesia's coal consumption was up 15 percent last year to an equivalent of 80.3 million tons of oil, measured in Mtoe, from the previous year at 69.8 Mtoe, according to BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2016.
Indonesia's coal consumption doubled from what it once was in 2010 and is now the eighth largest coal user in the world, behind China, India, the United States, Japan, Russia, South Africa and South Korea as quoted by JG.
"The global economies are mainly shifting from coal energy, but it is not the case in Indonesia as the country has rich resources in coal," Spencer Dale, BP group chief economist, said in a press conference on Wednesday (06/10).
Spencer said the decrease in global coal demand affected Indonesia's abundant supply, but nevertheless led to an increase in domestic consumption, the paper reported.
In a separate note, BP Statistical Review of World Energy June 2016 noted that, Global coal consumption fell by 1.8% in 2015, well below the 10-year average annual growth of 2.1% and the largest percentage (and volumetric) decline in our data set.
All of the net decline was accounted for by the US (-12.7%, the world’s largest volumetric decline) and China (-1.5%), partially offset by modest increases in India (+4.8%) and Indonesia (+15%).
Global coal production fell by 4%, with large declines in the US (-10.4%), Indonesia (-14.4%), and China (-2%). Coal’s share of global primary energy consumption fell to 29.2%, the lowest share since 2005.
