THE FREIGHT MARKET WAS FIRM; ALL SEGMENTS WERE UP THIS PAST WEEK
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rose and ending in a positive note this past week. The BDI was up 17.62% from last week and Cape Index was up 41.84% or around 703 points week over week.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was reported up 17.62% week over week and ended at 941 points on 23 September 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index was up 41.84% week over week. The BCI closed 2383 points on 23 September 2016. The Panamax index (BPI) was also rose 11.76% to 722 points on 23 September. The Supramax index (BSI) was down 1.66% to 671 points on 23 September 2016, compared to 660 points on 16 September 2016.
Meantime, the handy size index was almost at same levels closing at 421 points (up by 1.44 pct).
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India passing through Singapore, rated at around US$ 8500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 6500 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be steady this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 15,202 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 5,790 per day, the Cape and panamax average charter rates were rose week over week.
The spot Supramax’s average charters rate was at around $ 7,019 per day, while the Handy-size ships were at $ 6,095 per day. The spot average charter rates for supra and handy were rose compared to last week’s charter rate.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 11,000 per day, the Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,500 per day and Handysize at US$ 6,500per day.
The Cape size average future rates were up this week and Panamax, Supramax & and Handy Size vessel’s average future rates were no change compared to last week’s reported rates.
The Supramax S8 route charter rates slightly up (0.57%) week over week to $6869 per day on Friday 23 September 2016 ($6830 was reported on 16 September 2016). Freight rate from Indonesia to India is expected to be firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was down 1.50 percent and closed at US$ 45.89 per barrel. The bunker prices were up and closed at US$ 258.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex. Singapore on 23 September 2016).
