CHINA IS THE PRICE-SETTING COUNTRY FOR GLOBAL THERMAL COAL
COALspot.com: China has been the driver of global coal growth since 2009. When China became the largest coal importer in 2011, the country also has become the price setter for steam coal. China has not just determined the direction of coal prices, the country also sets sea freight directions particularly for big size ships.
In fact, the United States, India, the EU are also largest coal consumers, but the China is the only country who can set the direction of price movement of global thermal coal.
The world’s coal industry has operated under stressful conditions since early 2012 due to a combination of oversupply and sinking demand. After several years of coma, coal has been a surprise positive performer this year, supported by China’s new policy on its domestic coal miners.
According to Yahoo finance, China's coal output has fallen more than 10 percent so far this year as a result of government order on miners to lower output to the equivalent of 276 days of production. China has also cut about 150 million metric tons of capacity by the end of August -- equivalent to almost the entire thermal coal exports last year from Colombia and South Africa. China is aiming to chop about 500 million tons by 2020.
Due to crackdown on its domestic coal miners, China has boosted demand for imported coal since April 2016 and International prices started to rally due to renewed demand from China after several years of slowdown.
Today the coal is the top attractive and the hottest commodity in the world.
The weekly CS (I) Coal Index for 5700 GAR coal of Indonesian origin rose 17.71% Since 22 April 2016. While 5000 GAR coal gained 18.38% for the same period.
The CS (i) Coal index is newly established an independent coal benchmark forecast for Indonesian particular coal types. The CS (i) Coal indices are generated through a Technology aided system, based on COALspot’s own proprietary algorithm requiring minimal human involvement.
Assessing the remainder of 2016, unless otherwise China back from its current coal policy, we are seeing, the current positive trend will continue and experience a stable demand growth.
