THE CAPE INDEX WAS UP 7.28% WEEK OVER WEEK
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities declined and ending in a slightly negative note this past week. The BDI was down 0.50% from last week and Cape Index was up 7.28% or around 114 points week over week.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was reported down 0.5% week over week and ended at 800 points on 16 September 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index was up 7.28% week over week. The BCI closed 1680 points on 16 September 2016. The Panamax index (BPI) was declined 1.82% to 646 points on 16 September. The Supramax index (BSI) was down 2.62% to 660 points on 16 September 2016, compared to 688 points on 9 September 2016.
Meantime, the handy size index was almost at same levels closing at 415 points (down by 0.95 pct).
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India passing through Singapore, rated at around US$ 8000-8500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 6000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be steady this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 10,929 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 5,182 per day, the Cape average charter rates were rose and week over week while Panamax spot freight was declined slightly.
The spot Supramax’s average charters rate was at around $ 6903 per day, while the Handy-size ships were at $ 5995 per day. The spot average charter rates were declined slightly compared to last week’s charter rate.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,500 per day, the Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,500 per day and Handysize at US$ 6,500per day.
The Cape size and Handy Size vessel’s average future rates were up slightly this week and Panamax & Supramax average future rates were fell slightly compared to last week’s reported rates.
The Supramax S8 route charter rates slightly down (1.41 %) week over week to $6830 per day on Friday 16 September 2016 ($6928 was reported on 9 September 2016). Freight rate from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady this week.
The Brent crude oil price was down 2.96 percent and closed at US$ 46.59 per barrel. The bunker prices also down and closed at US$ 251.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex. Singapore on 16 September 2016).
