THE FREIGHT MARKET WAS STEADY AND FIRM THIS PAST WEEK; BCI ROSE 18.74%
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rose and ending in a positive note this past week except Panamax sector. The BDI was up 5.42 percent from last week and Cape Index was up 18.74% around 48 points.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was rose week over week to 720 points on 26 August 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index was up 18.74% week over week. The BCI closed 1001 points on 26 August 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was down 5.5% to 687 points. While, the Supramax index (BSI) was rose 4.22% to 715 points on 29 August 2016, compared to 686 points on 22 August 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India passing through Singapore, rated at around US$ 9000-9500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 6000-6500 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be steady to firm this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 6921per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 5500 per day, the Panamax average charter rates were down week over week while cape average rates up slightly.
The Supramax’s average charters rate was at around $ 7481per day, decline slightly compared to last week’s average charter rate. While the Handy-size ships were at $ 6191per day, the average charter rates were up week over week.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 8,000 per day and Handysize at US$ 6,000 per day. The Cape size, Panamax, Supramax and Handy Size vessel’s average future rates were no change compared to last week’s reported rates.
The supramax S8 route charter rates slightly up (+4.48%) week over week to $ 6994 per day on Friday 26 August 2016 ($6694 was reported on 19 August 2016). Freight rate from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady to firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was down 1.88 percent and closed at US$ 49.92 per barrel. The bunker prices also up and closed at US$ 261.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 26 August 2016).
