THE SPOT FREIGHT MARKET STRENGTHEN OVER THIS WEEK
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rose as Cape and Panamax segments ending in a positive note this past week. The BDI was up 5.5 percent from last week and Cape Index was up around 121 points.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was rose week over week to 671 points on 12 August 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index up 15.71% week over week. The BCI closed 891 points on 12 August 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was up 9.84% to 703 points. However, the Supramax index (BSI) was declined 0.62% to 643 points on 12 August 2016, compared to 647 points on 5 August 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India passing through Singapore, rated at around US$ 7000 - 7500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 6000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be flat to slightly firm this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 6,236 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 5,625 per day, the average charter rates were up week over week. The Supramax’s average charters rate was at around $ 6,720 per day, decline slightly compared to last week’s average charter rate. While, the Handy-size ships were at $ 5728 per day, the average charter rate was up week over week.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 8,000 per day and Handysize at US$ 6,000 per day. The Cape size, Panamax, Supramax and Handy Size vessel’s average future rates were flat compared to last week’s reported rates.
The supramax S8 route charter rates declined slightly (0.09%) week over week to $ 6,519 per day on Friday 12 August 2016 ($6,538 was reported on 5 August 2016). Freight rate from Indonesia to India is expected to be Flat to firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was up 6.09 percent and closed at US$ 46.97 per barrel. The bunker prices also up and closed at US$ 229.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 12 August 2016).
