BALTIC INDEX ENDED NEGATIVE NOTE THIS PAST WEEK ON WEAKER RATES ACROSS ALL LARGE VESSEL SEGMENTS
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities slide slightly as Cape, Panamax and Supramax segments ending in a negative note this past week. The BDI was down 8.63 percent from last week and Cape Index was down around 127 points.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was down week over week to 656 points on 29 July 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index declined 14.19% week over week. The BCI closed 768 points on 29 July 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was also slides 16.32% to 692 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was declined 3.87% to 671 points on 29 July 2016, compared to 698 points on 22 July 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India through Singapore, rated at around US$ 8000-8500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 6000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be flat to soft this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 5,440 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 5,538 per day, the Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 7, 014 per day, decline slightly compared to last week’s average charter rates. The Handy-size ships were at $ 5, 803per day, the average charter rate was up week over week.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 8,000 per day and Handysize at US$ 6,000 per day. The Cape size and Panamax vessel’s average future rates fell slightly while Supramax and Handy-size vessel’s rates show no change from last week reported charter rates.
The supramax S8 route charter rates declined slightly (0.98%) week over week to $ 6675 per day on Friday 29 July 2016 ($6741 was reported on 22 July 2016). Freight rate from Indonesia to India is expected to be Flat to weak this week.
The Brent crude oil price was down 6.86 percent and closed at US$ 42.46 per barrel. The bunker prices also down and closed at US$ 216.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 29 July 2016).
