THE BDI UP 3.75 PERCENT ; BCI FELL 1.51% WEEK OVER WEEK
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rose this past week. The BDI was up 3.75 percent from last week and Cape Index was down around 1.51%.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was up week over week to 609 points on 24 June 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index declined 1.51% week over week or down 14 points. The BCI closed 913 points on 24 June 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was up 7.14% to 585 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was up 5.04% to 583 points on 24 June 2016, compared to 555 points on 17 June 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India through Singapore, rated at around $ 6,500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 5,000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be flat to firm this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 6,452 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 4,681 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 6,101 per day and Handysize ships were at $ 4,855 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,500 per day and Handysize at US$ 6,000 per day. No change from the previous week.
The S8 route for supramax moved up or increased by 7.88% week over week to $ 5,313 per day on Friday 24 June 2016 (S8 as on 17 June 2016 $ 4925 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady/firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was down 1.55 percent and closed at US$ 48.41 per barrel. The bunker prices up and closed at US$ 242 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 24 June 2016).
