FREIGHT RATES ARE EXPECTED TO BE FLAT TO SOFT THIS WEEK
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities continued to rose this week.
The freight market was steady and all segments except Panamax were up ending on a positive note.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities up 2.18% week over week to 703 points on 29 April 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index also rose 2.95 % week over week or up 32 points. The BCI closed 1117 points on 29 April 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was down 9.37% to 667 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was rose 4.3% to 582 points on 29 April 2016, compared to 558 points on 22 April 2016.
The handy size index was also up 3.67% to 367 points on 22 April 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India (passing through Singapore) rated at around $ 6000 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 5000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be flat to soft this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 8,891 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 5,326 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 6,084 per day and Handy-size ships were at $ 5,192 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 11,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,500 per day and Handy size at US$ 6,000 per day.
The S8 route for supramax firmed up and was up by 1.70% week over week to $4,436 per day on Friday 29 April 2016 (S8 as on 22 April 2016 $ 4,513 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady to firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was up 9.06 % week over week and closed at US$ 48.13 per barrel. The bunker prices closed at US$ 224 pmt (IFO 380 CST ex Singapore on 29 April 2016).
