CAPESIZE INDEX ROSE 44.66 PER CENT WEEK OVER WEEK
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities continued to rose this week.
The freight market was steady and all segments were up ending in positive note.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities up 15.95% week over week to 635 points on 15 April 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index also rose 44.66% week over week or up 293 points. The BCI closed 949 points on 15 April 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was up 13.06% to 727 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was rose 7.58% to 525 points on 15 April 2016, compared to 488 points on 8 April 2016.
The handy size index was also up 12.24% to 321 points on 15 April 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India (passing Singapore) rated at around $6500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $6000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be firm this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 7,076 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 5,796 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 5,494 per day and Handy size ships were at $ 4,639 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,000 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,000 per day and Handy size at US$ 6,000 per day.
The S8 route for supramax firmed up and was up by 4.70% week over week to $4,516 per day on Friday 15 April 2016 (S8 as on 8 April 2016 $ 4,313 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady to firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was up 2.76 % week over week and closed at US$ 43.10 per barrel. The bunker prices closed at US$ 192 pmt (IFO 380 CST ex Singapore on 15 April 2016).
