BDI ROSE TO ITS HIGHEST LEVEL IN FOUR MONTHS
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities continued to rose this week.
The freight market was steady and all segments were up ending in positive note.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities up 19.78% week over week to 539 points on 8 April 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index also rose 90.14% week over week or up 311 points. The BCI closed 656 points on 8 April 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was up 20.18% to 643 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was rose 2.52% to 488 points on 8 April 2016, compared to 476 points on 1 April 2016.
The handy size index was also up 5.15% to 286points on 8 April 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India (passing Singapore) rated at around $6000-6500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $5500-6000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be firm this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 5,089 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 5,131 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 5,102 per day and Handy size ships were at $ 4,213 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape size ships were at US$ 10,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,000 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,000 per day and Handy size at US$ 6,000 per day.
The S8 route for supramax firmed up and was up by 12.20% week over week to $4,313 per day on Friday 8 April 2016 (S8 as on 1 April 2016 $ 3,844 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady to firm this week.
The Brent crude oil prices was up 5.75 % week over week and closed at US$ 41.94 per barrel. The bunker prices closed at US$ 180 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 8 April 2016).
