BALTIC DRY SHIPPING INDEX DROPS TO 373 POINTS; DECLINE 13% WEEK OVER WEEK
 COALspot.com: The freight market dropped this week as the BDI declined further 13 percent to 373 points week over week. The Cape index was down 42 percent to 198 points week over week.
The Panamax index was also fell 12 percent to 381 points, while the Supramax index was down 8 percent to 394 points. The smaller size ships, the handy size index was decline 4 percent to 245 points week over week on 15 January 2016.
The supramax charter rates for Indonesia to India were rated around $ 4000-5000 per day delivery Singapore. The Supramax rates have now moved down to USD 5000 per day, a level not sufficient to cover daily running costs. The Panamax vessels were rated around $ 3000 per day, delivery Shanghai, the level far below the ship’s daily operating cost.
Freight rates are expected to be weak this week and no indication of the improvements seen in the near future. The supply is dominating compared to the demand for ships.
The Panamax’s average charter rates were reported at around US$3049 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $4125 per day and Handy size ships were at $3604 per day.
In the meantime, the futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported slightly higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape size ships were at US$ 8000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7000 per day, Supramax at US$ 7000 per day and Handy size at US$ 6000 per day.
The S8 route charter rates for supramax down 13.43 pct closing at $3641 per day. Indonesia to India freight rates are expected to be soft this week. The current levels or below levels are expected to continues this week.
The Brent crude oil price was closed at $31.01 per barrel on 16 January 2016. The bunker prices were also soft and closed at $152.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 15th Jan 2016).
