INTERVIEW : FRANZ ESCALANTE, CHIEF OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS, MINERA CHINALCO, PERU
We are interested in the technology of Autonomous trucks, the new-generation trucks are not remote controlled, they are truly autonomous - Franz Escalante
IXG: How important is the role of IT in automating the mine operations. We keep hearing about IT/OT convergence. How far are we in implementing such projects on a large scale?
Franz Escalante: IT or ITCA (Information technology, Communications and Automation) is now considered more than a support area, it identifies the value chain aligned to the strategic business plan, provides a set of services that integrate the corporate network with the industrial network. This integration allows employees to be more informed about operations and provides better tools for management decision-making. IT/OT integration results in less costly technology deployment, more information for sustainability and productivity.
There are some challenges to accomplish this convergence, such as responsibility of the information delivery and ownership of the technology, for that is very important to have well defined standards and effective communication channels.
IXG: Where does Minera Chinalco stand in terms of moving towards fully automated mines? Does reducing the number of humans from the mines makes it safer?
Franz Escalante: Minera Chinalco took the first step towards fully automated mines by converting IT into ITCA, an area that is responsible for automation in all its mines, this area is the point of integration between Operations and Administrative areas and identifies the requirements and opportunities for improvement to make operations safer for people.
IXG: What is one technology that Minera Chinalco is closely following and you think will be the game changer in the coming couple of years?
Franz Escalante: We are interested in the technology of Autonomous trucks, the new generation trucks are not remote controlled, they are truly autonomous. They have several in-built safety features which prevent them from colliding with other trucks, allowing them to operate alongside manned vehicles.
IXG: Do you think automation and innovation is the best way forward for increasing production efficiencies in a volatile market?
Franz Escalante: The technology allows new innovations in the operations, the idea is to use tools for improvement and automation technologies which are aligned with the business plan of the company, making effective and proper use of resources.
IXG: How do you rate the importance of some of the topics being discussed at the Technology and Innovation in Mining 2015 forum?
Franz Escalante: It’s a great opportunity to share experiences and challenges with large companies and exchange stories and experiences in the field of automation. This will provide a better view to the audience about the technology we already have on hand, opening the minds of each one and draw a road map for new projects.
Franz Escalante, Chief of Information Systems, Minera Chinalco Peruwas was interviewed by the Conference Production Team at Information Exchange Group
Information Exchange Group’s Technology and Innovation in Mining 2015
The inaugural edition of the Technology and Innovation in Mining Summit is taking place on the 10th& 11th of September in Toronto. This is the first time the leading stakeholders from the top operating companies are coming together to discuss, deliberate and debate on how technology and innovation can help organizations achieve greater production efficiencies. With declining commodity prices, mining companies are looking to produce more with less resources and automation and innovation is the only way forward.
The conference is being organized by Information Exchange Group (IXG). For more information about conference, click here
