CAPESIZE: RATES ARE STILL DISAPPOINTING - FEARNLEYS

The handy market had a stronger sentiment before the Easter holidays, but have as the bigger panamaxes seen a softening tendency this week. According to Fearnleys, it is less cargoes in the market and a growing list of available tonnage in both hemispheres. The TA´s are now being fixed in region of USD 6800 while the Pac rounds are fixing in the low 6k´s. The ECSA market, which gave a push before Easter, is now slower, and a 55k dwt was reported to have done USD 12,500 for trip back to Continent mid-week. The period market is suffering from less spot activity and little has been concluded. Owners with good specs and Feast delivery still asking a nine in front for the shorter periods and seeing charterers there in the low 8´s.
Panamax
The Fearnleys ship broker further noted that, after a quiet Easter we expected activity to pick up this week, but this has not happened so far. The Atlantic is flat, where trans-Atlantic rounds continue around USD 4,500 per day. In the Pacific, the trend is once again down. We are now back to fixing aps delivery for nopac and the Pacific round is now paying around USD 4,000. Prior Easter we saw increased activity and rates in ECSA, but this positive sentiment is also gone and rates are back down to below USD 12000+200,000 BB for ECSA fronthauls. According to broker, the period market is weak; signaling that not many market players has much faith in this market. A panamax was fixed in the low 6000´s for a one-year period; however, modern tonnage can achieve a bit more.
Capesize
Commenting on Capes, Fearnleys says, rates are still disappointing, as in other dry segments. There is still no prospects for improvement for the near future and activity remains very low. Tubarao/Qingdao freight rates are presently below USD 10 and West Australia to China are in the low to mid 4 region, which they have been for some time.
