CAPE DEMAND WAS STILL EXTREMELY SOFT THIS PAST WEEK ACROSS BOTH BASINS - INTERMODAL
 COALspot.com: The performance of the Dry Bulk market, which found itself in desperate search of support for yet another week, has left very little hope that a substantial improvement could be imminent, Intermodal broker said in its latest weekly report.
The broker further noted that, the catalyst behind the down-ward trend is still the Capesize market, which remains under great pressure, while the rest of the smaller size segments continue to outperform the bigger ones, although the effect on rates across the board is still under the command of the extremely negative sentiment that has washed over the entire market. At the same time, overwhelmed by what could be lying ahead, those owners that fix their vessels on period contracts seem willing to accept further substantial discounts off last dones.
The Greece based broker further said that, despite the fact that majors made a small come back in the Pacific, overall Cape demand was still extremely soft this past week across both basins, with charterers in a dominant position and owners powerless to put forth any resistance. The BCI touched new record lows, while the average rate for the segment has now moved below $5,000/day.
On commenting on Panamax, the broker says, the Panamax market witnessed better levels of activity compared to Capes although the long list of ballasters in key trading regions in the Atlantic prevented any rate upside taking place. There has been market talk of improved market in the Pacific as this week kicked off although we haven't seen anything materializing yet in terms of rates.
Rates for both Supras and Handies closed off the week slightly down and slightly up respectively, with Supra tonnage witnessing support in the Pacific, while prospects for both segments still are still much better compared to the rest of the market, broker said.
