CAPES WERE UNDER PRESSURE; LOST 20% WITHIN A WEEK
 COALspot.com: " The negative environment in which the week prior ended, marked this past week as well, which closed off on Friday noting the first weekly loss for the Dry Bulk market since last month, " - Intermodal.
According to Intermodal, the major softening that took place in the Capesize market was the major driver behind this downward movement, which was also evident in Panamaxes, while at the same time the smaller size segments held off much better. The broker further said in its latest report that, mixed news from China continue to shape the sentiment of uncertainty. From one hand, the country’s industrial production has come in softer last month, while in regards to the coal trade, the recently established free trade agreement between China and Australia has exempt Australian coking coal producers form the recently announced tariff on Chinese coal imports from the country.
Intermodal noted that, rates for Capes were under pressure amidst thin activity in both basins persisted throughout the week, while the average rate for the segment noted a weekly decrease of more than 20%. Pressure on the period market was evident with owners trying to resist falling below last dones, while Intermodal expects rates to move sideways this week.
Commenting on Panamax, Intermodal says, the market was also down last week, for both spot and period contracts, with any positional increases taking place being limited, while at the same time activity ex-USG is still under pressure for the Panamax range.
Rates for both Supras and Handies were also down week-on-week although marginally. Activity in the Pacific revived for the bigger part of the week, on the back of a fair number of coal cargoes being fixed to both India and China, while at the same time the USG region continued witnessing a long list of ballasters searching for business.
