COAL MINISTER WANTS INDIA TO STOP COAL IMPORTS IN TWO OR THREE YEARS
 COALspot.com: India to ramp up coal production to a billion tonnes by 2019 from its current level of 490 million tones. According to Power and Coal Minister of India Piyush Goyal “ It is clearly doable, it is not a fanciful target.”
India the third largest coal producers in the world after China and US and one of the world’s largest coal importer, may be able to stop thermal coal imports in the next three years if the coal India, the state owned and the world largest coal miner able to increase its coal production to 1 billion ton per annum by 2019.
Indian government has asked Coal India, to increase its coal output to 1 billion tonnes by 2019 to feed existing and upcoming power plants.
"I'm very confident of achieving these targets and am very confident that India's current account deficit will not be burdened with the amount of money we lose for imports of coal," Mr. Goyal told a conference, media reports says.
The minister , according to media reports, added that, "Possibly in the next two or three years we should be able to stop imports of thermal coal”. He even went a step further and said the country should make efforts to become an exporter of coal by drawing up a clear roadmap for the same.
If India able to produce 1 billion tons of coal by 2019 and stops coal imports, the global physical coal prices will face downward pressure. Indian coal imports rose to 168.4Mmt last fiscal year, and the government estimated earlier this year that the domestic shortage would range between 185 and 265 million tonnes by 2016/17.
