SGX SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED NEW SGX COAL PRODUCTS
COALspot.com: Singapore Exchange (‘SGX’) has announced that, the exchange has successfully launched its new Coking and Thermal Coal products on 4 August 2014.
A total of 28,000 metric tonnes of Coking Coal was brokered by Straits Singapore and Freight Investor Services, while 4,000 metric tonnes of API 5 Thermal Coal and 1,000 metric tonnes of API 4 Thermal Coal was brokered by Marex Spectron and cleared on SGX.
According to SGX, “The addition of the SGX coking coal contracts, alongside the other available contracts, puts critical mass into this commodity and will help bring further liquidity to the broader range of ferrous derivatives, enabling traders to manage risk from mine to mill,” said Li Meng, General Manager at Concord Fortune.
“The launch of the API 5 derivative is a testament to the growing confidence in one of Asia’s most traded physical coal products namely Australian 5,500 NAR high ash coal. The API 5 derivative gives Australian producers, Asian end users and traders enhanced risk management tools in addition to increasing the liquidity for market participants to manage the inter-relationships between the API 5 and other coal indices, SGX said in its press release. The Caravel Group provides value-added solutions across the maritime, metallurgical and energy industries and welcomes the API 5 derivative as an additional tool to our risk management procedures,” said Caravel Carbons.
Managing Director of Rexcoal Pte. Ltd. (CCS Singapore) , Lawrence Ng said, “Increasingly and over the last few years, the majority of the South African coal has been delivered into Asia with reduced reliance on declining European demand. The launch of the API 4 thermal coal derivatives by SGX is relevant and timely in serving the risk management needs of Asian thermal coal participants on top of its API 5, API 8 and Indonesian Sub-Bit coal derivative products in the Asian time zone.”
Coking Coal – enhancing the steel derivatives complex
We are pleased to see a number of trades upon launch spanning all contract months from September through December 2014, said SGX. Key market participants included Concord Fortune as well as a number of undisclosed international and Chinese parties. SGX Coking Coal augments the existing Iron Ore and HRC Steel derivative contracts, providing market participants with more effective price risk management solutions across the steel value chain.
Thermal Coal – expanding across all major Asian price points
“ The addition of our new API 4 and API 5 Thermal Coal contracts complements our existing thermal coal offering, and serves the needs of the growing Asian thermal coal market providing key Asian prices on one platform in the same time-zone” said SGX.
