LACK OF COAL SHIPMENTS FROM FAR EAST/SE ASIA, THE PRESSURE ON CHARTER RATES CONTINUED THIS WEEK
 COALspot.com: This week, the freight rates were almost flat as charter rates were also almost steady from last week.
The BDI was up by 2.59 pct week on week closed at 751 points while the cape size index was down by 4.77 pct for the same period. Cape index was closed at 1,176 points compared to 1235 this Friday.
The Panamax index was slightly up or gained 4.26 pct and closed at 611 points on 1 August while the supramax index was up by 10.47 pct and closed at 728 points. The handy size index was down by 4.03 pct closing at 357 points.
Due to lack of cargo or coal shipments from Far East/SE Asia, the pressure on charter rates continued this week. The market is expected to improve post EID holidays in Indonesia. Freight rates are expected to be Flat to soft next week.
According to market reports, the average charter rates shows at US$ 8522 per day for cape size vessels, US$ 4859 per day Panamax , US$ 7608 per day Supramax and Handysize at US$ 5357 per day.
The futures for three years (2015-2017) were at around Cape/US$ 19,000 per day, Panamax/US$ 10,500 per day, Supramax/US$ 10,500 per day , Handy size/US$ 9,000 per day.
The route S8 route for supramax was soft and it was down by 2.33 pct week on week and closed at US$ 6,478 per day (last week US$ 6,633 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be soft to steady next week.
The Brent crude oil prices slightly firmed up and was up by 3.27 pct closing at US$ 104.84 per barrel (last week US$ 108.39 per barrel). The bunker prices also firmed up slightly and closed at US$ 601.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 1st Aug 2014).
