CAPES SEEMED TO BE STRANDED AT THE SAME LEVELS; PANAMAXES MANAGED TO SLIGHTLY REVIVE - INTERMODAL
COALspot.com: The Dry Bulk market took a breath this past week, as both Panamaxes and Supras started to see a small influx of activity, which was just enough to reshuffle some of the tonnage lists that had amassed, according to Intermodal's latest weekly report.
Intermodal's analyst added that, with iron ore prices reaching their lowest level in over one month and demand for thermal coal from China easing, it seems that dry bulk commodities are not giving the market the helping hand needed at the moment. Saying that, the week ended with sentiment slightly improved, mostly reflected in period numbers across the board.
Capes seemed to be stranded at the same levels they where a week prior, with market sentiment shifting sideways as the lack of strong interest failed to provide any clear market direction, although period numbers got a nice boost and despite sentiment overall currently still remaining fairly soft for the segment.
Broker added that, Panamaxes managed to slightly revive, although with the average T/C still below $5,000/day this was hardly a reversal. Sentiment for the Atlantic Panamax was bit better towards the end of last week. On the other hand pressure on rates was unabated in the East, with fresh inquiry still on offer, but long tonnage lists choking off any improvement in rates. Some period business was noted, with a short period of 4-6 months trading.
Concluding Intermodal's broker’s analysis, broker said, Supras were the only ones to see a good level of fresh inquiries in both basins allowing for a steady push by owners for slightly better levels. Handies on the other hand were still under pressure and with the exception of some short period interest, charterers denied the market any substantial new business.
