PANAMAXES WERE BACK ON A DOWNWARD COURSE; CAPES WERE FEELING THE MOST PRESSURE - INTERMODAL
 COALspot.com: The Dry Bulk market was on a downward spiral this week, with the BDI noting another week-on-week decline of the magnitude of 10% this time around, while rates dropped across the board for all size segments. With the exception of the BPI, all other dry indices have touched fresh year lows, while period numbers were off as well, Intermodal said in its latest weekly report.
"We nevertheless expect the market to stabilize this week and possibly also see an upward correction over the following days", according to Intermodal.
In its latest report, shipbroker intermodal further said on the Capesize market that, capes were feeling the most pressure with the average of the 4 TC routes dropping to below $ 10,000/day. The key routes in the Pacific remain close to last dones, while both basins were seeing minimal fresh inquiries, with tonnage lists starting to swell up early on in the week. We have yet to see any improvement this current week and we expect things to remain stable.
On the Panamax front it noted that, following a slight upward correction the week prior, Panamaxes were back on a downward course, with rates now heading towards the lows of late June, while most of the positive sentiment that had accumulated momentum during the early part of July seems to have had the wind knocked out of it. Saying that, a few well-positioned vessels did manage to get better numbers, while the 6 month T/C moved to below $ 10,000/day.
Intermodal brokers concluded about smaller size, things were not looking much better for the smaller size segments either, with rates for both Supras and Handies continuing their slow decent, while the later being slightly more stable. The Atlantic basin seemed to be the worst out of the two this week, though there was an overall pessimistic feel amongst owners creating an inability to withstand any increased pressure for lower levels put on by charterers all around.
