SGX EXPANDS ACROSS THE BULKS WITH NEW COAL PRODUCTS
COALspot.com: Singapore Exchange (SGX) is expanding its bulk commodity derivatives offering by launching new coking and thermal coal products on 4 August 2014. According to SGX's e-mail note, In addressing the market’s needs for more effective risk management solutions on commodities, SGX is launching new coking and thermal coal products early next month.
Coking Coal – enhancing the steel derivatives complex
Coking coal, also known as metallurgical coal, is a key raw material in the production of steel. Today, the majority of seaborne coking coal trade flow is concentrated in the Asia Pacific region. Australia makes up well over half of total seaborne supply, while approximately two thirds of demand is from major North Asian steelmaking regions (such as China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan & India).
Comprising approximately one-third of the variable cost in the production of crude steel, fluctuations in coking coal prices can significantly impact steelmaker profitability. Furthermore, the industry is transitioning towards wider adoption of shorter-term spot and index-linked pricing, adding greater price volatility and uncertainty across the steel value chain.
SGX believes that, the new SGX Coking Coal Swaps and Futures will augment the existing Iron Ore and HRC Steel derivative contracts. Market participants can more effectively lock in the ‘hot metal spread’ on one single clearing platform, and at the same time benefit from inter-commodity margin offsets, improving capital efficiency.
A note from SGX further said that, with increasing adoption of shorter-term index-linked pricing, SGX will launch two new premium hard coking coal derivative contracts (FOB Australia & CFR China) to support market participants with more effective price risk management solutions across the steel value chain.
Thermal Coal – all major Asian prices: one time-zone, one platform
Asia is both a key producer and consumer of thermal coal.
A decade ago, Asia accounted for approximately half of seaborne thermal coal demand. Today, Asian accounts for about three quarters of total seaborne demand. China and India in particular have been key drivers of seaborne thermal coal demand growth in recent years, while Indonesia and Australia are key exporters of the commodity, said SGX.
According to SGX, to serve the needs of the growing Asian thermal coal market, SGX is expanding its existing thermal coal product offerings (API 8 and IHS McCloskey Indonesian Sub-Bituminous Coal derivatives) to include derivatives based on the API 4 and API 5 indices.
API 4 is the price benchmark for thermal coal exported FOB (free-on-board) from Richards Bay in South Africa. While South African exports were historically more of a European market, the market has evolved in recent years and Asia now accounts for a majority of API 4 demand.
API 5 meanwhile is the price benchmark for thermal coal exported FOB from Newcastle in Australia, which has become an increasingly important reference price as Chinese imports have risen.
SGX enhances its suite of bulk commodity products with four new coking and thermal coal derivative products. These new contracts will complement our existing AsiaClear products to provide customers with access to even more effective, efficient and comprehensive risk management. According to SGX, all four contracts will be launched on 4 August 2014.
