RICHARDS BAY COAL TERMINAL SHIPPED 4.221 MMT OF COAL TO SOUTHERN ASIAN COUNTRIES IN MAY
 COALspot.com: South Africa's Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) the single largest export coal terminal in the world, shipped 5.58 million tons of coal in May 2014, up 2.39% from the previous-month, according to latest data released by Richards Bay Coal Terminal. Richards Bay shipped 5.45 tons of coal in April 2014, the terminal reported.
Year-to-date coal exports at Richards Bay, which has a design capacity of 91 million tons per year, totaled 26,992,933 tonnes a note from terminal said. Approximately 18.55 million tons coal or 68.8% of total exports shipped to Asian countries.
In May, southern Asian countries have imported the largest share of Richards Bay exports, taking in 64.4% of the total coal shipped from the terminal. Markets in South eastern Asia accounted for 2.5% of the volume. Western Asia imported around 8.7% of volume shipped from RBCT, port’s operating statistics shows.
75.6% of total coal exports from RBCT or approximately 4,221,254 tons of coal shipped to south-eastern Asia, western Asia and southern Asia in May 2014.
Total shipments to Europe represented 15.9% (Western Europe 10.7% & Southern Europe 5.2%) of the total exports. Western Europe imports 2.7% less coal from RBCT compared to its April imports. Southern Europe's coal imports from RBCT up 3.8 percent month on month.
Stockpiles at the terminal increased to 2.57 million tonnes end of May, compared to 4.15 million tonnes at the end of April 2014.
Sixty three vessels, including 33 Cape size vessels, 10 Panamaxes and 20 Handy size vessels entered the coal terminal in May, compared to 32 capes,11 Panamxes & 19 Handy size vessel in the previous month.
South Africa produced high calorific value coal and one of the favoring coal supplier for Europe as well as Asia particularly India.
