THE FREIGHT MARKET WAS QUITE FIRM THIS PAST WEEK
COALspot.com: The freight market was quite firm this past week with BDI sharply increased by 22.65 pct week on week and closed at 1543 points, while cape index saws some strong activity and was very firm for the same period. Cape index was up by 22.52 pct closed at 2980 points.
However the Panamax index fell 2.18 pct week on week and index was closed at 1075 points, 24 point lower than last week closing. The supramax index continued its strong trend and was up by 2.54 pct and closed at 1131 points. The handy size index was almost steady closed at 663 points week on week.
In the Far east/SE Asia the charter rates on supramax firmed up and most vessels were rating around US$ 16,000 per day passing Singapore and US$ 14-15000 per day for delivery South China for trip to India. Some vessels were keen to go to WC India and were offering some discount for calling WC India. Panamax rates remained almost steady and expected see the charter rates strengthening up due to strong Cape charter rates.
Freight rates expected to be firm this week from Indonesia to India.
The average charter rates was at Cape/US$ 24,243 per day , Panamax/US$ 11,831per day , Supramax/US$ 11,831 per day and Handy size/US$ 9654 per day.
The futures for three years (2014-2016) was at around Cape/US$ 25,000 per day, Panamax/US$ 13,500 per day, Supramax/US$ 13,500 per day , Handy size/US$ 10500 per day.
The route S8 route was up this week by 9.94 pct and closed at US$ 12533 per day (last week US$ 11400 per day ) with the freights rates from Indonesia to India being fairly firm.
The Brent crude oil prices was almost at same levels and closed at US$ 109.00 per barrel (last week US$ 109.07 per barrel). The bunker prices was steady and closed at 598.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 7th March 2014).
