FREIGHT MARKETS SEE CONTINUED WEAK PERFORMANCE
 COALspot.com: The market has continued to soften particularly in the far East/SE Asia sector.
The BDI was down 6 pct week on week, the index was closed at 1421 points week ended 17 January 2014.
The cape size and panamax indices also fell 3.57% and 3.5% respectively for the same period. Cape index closed 2026 points and 1564 on 17 January 2014. The supramax and handysize indices also followed cape and panama trend week ended 17 January 2014. Supramax closed at 1165 points (-2.1%) and Handysize closed at 719 points (-1.51%).
In the feast/SE Asia the charter rates on supramax was soft, it is possibly due to ban of minerals export from Indonesia. Spot rates on Supramax from Indonesia to EC India were being rated at $11.00 pmt. The freight market is expected to be soft for next 2/3 weeks probably until Chinese New Year.
The average charter rates was at Cape/US$ 17,452 per day , Panamax/US$ 12,921 per day , Supramax/US$ 12,448 per day and Handy size/US$ 10,465 per day.
The futures for three years (2014-2016) was at around Cape/US$ 18,000 per day, Panamax/US$ 12,500 per day, Supramax/US$ 12,000 per day , Handy size/US$ 10,000 per day.
The supramax index in the feast (S8 route) dropped 11.64 pct after many weeks of steady trend and closed at US$ 6,867 per day (last week US$ 7,772 per day) and charter rates were soft. The freight rates from WC India to china was fairly steady with supramax rating around US$ 13,000-14,000 per day.
The Brent crude oil prices was down by 0.72 pct and closed at US$ 106.48 per barrel (last week US$ 107.25 per barrel). The bunker prices was steady and closed at 606.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 17th Jan 2014).
