DECISION ON ORE EXPORT BAN WILL BE MADE TOMORROW: INDUSTRY MINISTER, JG SAYS
Industry Minister M.S. Hidayat dismissed reports on Thursday that the government had made a decision on the matter. “We will only make a decision at the Presidential Office on Jan. 11”. “Any indicative figures that may have been disclosed so far, would be false.” the Jakarta globe, an English news paper reported today.
Indonesian Medias were previously reported that mining firms and the government had reached an agreement to lower the purity requirement.
The globe further reported today that, the Industry minister said, the government had yet to take a final decision. He also denied that the government was constantly changing its stance on the matter. “What happens is that our discussion was never far off from our agreement to ban ore exports,” he added.
A senior energy and mining analyst Kurtubi said on Thursday that the government’s decision to ease the export ban was understandable given the serious impact it could cause to mining companies and their workers, as quoted by The Jakarta post today.
But he called on the government to also impose sanctions on those who failed to honour their commitments to building smelting plants within the three-year transition period, the post further reported.
A new regulation is expected to be issued before the Jan. 12 deadline to regulate mineral industry and export.
