QUIET FREIGHT MARKET DUE TO LONG HOLIDAYS
COALspot.com: The market was soft this week with all indices down. However towards second half of the week the futures on segments was firming up.
The BDI was down 5.23 pct and closed at 2208 points and the cape index was also fell 8.74 pct closed 3875 points week on week.
The panamax index was fell by 11.35 pct and supramax index fell 4.57 percent for the same period. Panamax closed at 1858 points while the supramax index clsoed at 1482 points. The handysize index was closed almost at same levels as last week closing.
In view of coming holidays quite a few ships were struggling to fix before Christmas and there were quite a few ships spot.
Supramax passing Singapore were seen asking for around US$ 15,000 for trip via Indonesia to India. In the meantime, Panamax freight were soft and ships were being fixed around only US$ 11,500-12,000 per day. The Panamax were fairly holding as the grain movement from South America and US Gulf seemed to be firm.
The planned suspense over ban of minerals from Indonesia for export by second week January 2014 is expected to have a direct impact on the freight market. As of today, the government of Indonesia is firm on banning the unprocessed mineral by 12 January 2014, as per mining law which was endorsed by parliament on 12 January 2009.
The average charter rates were at Cape/US$ 35,886 per day , Panamax/US$ 14,815 per day , Supramax/US$ 15,500 per day and Handy size/US$ 11,645 per day.
The futures for three years (2014-2016) was at around Cape/US$ 20,000 per day, Panamax/US$ 13,000 per day, Supramax/US$ 12,000 per day , Handy size/US$ 10,000 per day.
The supramax index in the far east (S8 route) dropped almost 12.44 pct after many weeks and closed at US$ 12,810 per day (last week US$ 14,630 per day). The route S7 was at same levels closing at US$ 7,875 per day (Last week US$ 7,875 per day). The freight market is expected to be soft in view of holidays.
The Brent crude oil prices was up by 2.70 pct and closed at US$ 111.77 per barrel (last week US$ 108.83 per barrel). The bunker prices was soft and closed at 609.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 20th Dec 2013).
