SUPRAMAX'S FREIGHT RALLY COMES TO AN END THIS WEEK
 COALspot.com: The BDI was up by 7 pct closing at 2,330 points week on week and the cape index was also up by 10.51 points and closed at 4,246 points for the same period.
The Panamax index followed cape and BDI and up by 9 pct closed at 2,096 points. However, after weeks of rally, the supramax index saws a softness this week and the SE Asia market had a significant drop with index almost at same levels as last week. The handy size index was up by 25 points and at 814 points.
“Supramax passing Singapore were seen asking for around US 16,000 for trip via Indonesia to India. Panamax freight were still holding and not much softness seen”, says Capt. Reddy, Director of Solym Carriers Singapore. He further said that, the market is expected further down in coming weeks as the holidays are approaching in next two weeks. Owners were trying to get better rates from the current market before it is falling.
Still the suspense over ban of minerals exports by second week January 2014 in Indonesia is also expected to have a direct impact on the freight market, if the ban comes into force by 12 January 2014.
The average charter rates were at Cape/$ 37,510 per day , Panamax/$ 16,728 per day , Supramax/$ 16,242 per day and Handy size/$ 11,637 per day.
The futures for three years (2014-2016) were at around Cape/$ 19,000 per day, Panamax/$ 12,500 per day, Supramax/$ 12,000 per day , Handy size/$ 9,500 per day.
The supramax index in the far east (S8 route) dropped by 9.29 pct after many weeks of gains and closed at $ 14,630 per day (last week $ 16,128 per day). The S7 route was at same levels closed at $ 7,875 per day (Last week $ 7,875 per day).
The freight market is expected to be soft next week.
The Brent crude oil prices was also down by 2.50 pct and closed at $ 108.83 per barrel (last week $ 111.61 per barrel). The bunker prices was soft and closed at 602.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 13th Dec 2013).
