NTPC STARTED IMPORTING COAL THROUGH NW1 FOR ITS FARAKKA POWER PLANT
 COALspot.com: In a pioneering and path breaking operation, the very first consignment of about 69,060 metric tons of imported coal bought by MV HUAYANG PIONEER has been fully discharged at a deep sea offshore location by the Transshipper MV VIGHNRAJ at Sandheads deep waters about 60 miles from Haldia port, said SULA, the owner and operator of Transshipper MV VIGHNRAJ.
This is the largest parcel of coal ever discharged off Kolkata. Simultaneously with the ship to ship discharge operation, more than 20 inland barges belonging to Jindal ITF, after being loaded by the Transshipper infrastructure, have reached or are en-route for final discharge of coal to National Thermal Power Corporation, India (“NTPC”) Stockyard at Farakka along the National Waterway Number One (NW1) over 550km away, according to SULA.
SULA further said, NTPC has started importing coal through NW1 for NTPC's power plant located at Farakka, West Bengal. This project will reduce dependence on the overstretched railway and roadways network and bring about savings in millions of dollars annually besides providing NTPC with additional capacity via a “Clean and Green” waterborne route. Given the constraints of the Indian port sector, this project will bring a paradigm shift in logistics of bulk handling of dry bulk commodities in an environmentally safe manner. SULA’s achievement now clears the way to Haldia/Kolkata and similar shallow draft ports to bring large Capesize vessels for offshore unloading and without spending huge amounts of Capital on shore based infrastructure and expensive dredging.
The Transshipper MV Vighnraj is custom designed, owned and operated by SULA Shipping and Logistics, Pvt Ltd. MV Vighnraj is fitted with cargo handling equipment including high speed cranes, pay loaders and self-unloading belt system besides a storage capacity of approx 67000 metric tons. It can load or unload cargoes to / from deep drafted ocean going vessels. The Transshipper infrastructure is supported by STS mooring arrangement including fenders, tug boats and mooring masters. Vessel has accommodation for almost 60 persons including separate well equipped cabins for port officials and tally clerks. Through this Transshipper Infrastructure, approx Three Million metric tons per annum (3MMTPA) will be transported to NTPC plant at Farakka as per the tripartite agreement between NTPC, Inland Waterways Authority of India (“IWAI”) & JITF. This cargo is in addition to the land based route and will save over 200,000 Truck moves / year, besides reducing costs, pollution and pilferage while operating in an environmentally friendly manner, SULA’s note says.
