DRY BULK MARKET BACK ON HIGHER GROUND - NIKOS ROUSSANOGLOU, HELLENIC SHIPPING NEWS
The dry bulk market is strengthening as a result of higher demand for Capesize vessels. The BDI (Baltic Dry Index) was up by 146 points yesterday, ending the session at 1,719. Capesize led the gains, with the Baltic Capesize Index rising by an impressive 352 points. Panamaxes were also on a high note, followed by smaller gains in the Supramax and Handy markets. In a report this week, shipbroker Intermodal said that market sentiment is already more positive as freight rates for the bigger size segments have started stabilizing, while those for Supras and Handies continue to climb.
In its latest weekly analysis, shipbroker Fearnleys commented on the Capesize market that "after dipping across the board, the spot trend has again reversed market appears better supported. West Australia/China rates have pushed north of USD 10 PMT again, and cargoes out of Brazil are more apparent. Whilst the Tubarao/China index remains flat w-o-w, increased volumes on this route are likely to result in improved levels shortly. Transatlantic activity remains limited in comparison. Paper has reflected the positive sentiment, with December contracts gaining $1200 w-o-w to present USD 19k, cal 14 gaining about $600-700 to come in at usd 17k. Period values for about 1 year on a good 180 dwt dely Far East vessel are currently valued between 17.5k and 18.5k per day, with the latter just being concluded for a period of 10-15 months".
Frontline 2012 Ltd. said yesterday that "according to the Baltic Exchange the average Capesize spot earnings in the third quarter of 2013 was $18,968/day compared to $6,214/day in the second quarter. According to Chinese official data iron ore imports to China increased from 200 million tons in the second quarter to 217 million tons in the third quarter of 2013. The coal imports increased from 69 million tons to 70 million tons in the same period.
According to Fearnley's the Capesize fleet (150-200'dwt) totaled 1,041 vessels at the end of the third quarter of 2013, an increase of five vessels from the previous quarter. The revised order book counted 103 vessels at the end of the third quarter, compared with 95 vessels the previous quarter, representing 9.9 percent of the Capesize fleet", the ship owner noted.
In the Panamax market, according to Fearnleys, "the week started as the last one ended, in a slow pace. Atlantic basin appears to be stronger with expectations from Owners for a firmer market, however charterers have been reluctant to pay up to cover their requirements. Short Baltic rounds paying in the region of 13-14k while trans Atlantic paying 12-13-ish. For front haul owners obtaining healthy 23-24 k via USG or 18+ 850 GBB. From midweek we have seen more fresh cargoes in both Hemispheres indicating a positive trend. Pacific rounds paying arnd 12-13 k, tick less for NOPAC. Most probably we will se a firmer trend for the coming week before market again slows down. Period market not very active lately but 11-13 months and similar periods paying in the 11,750 region".
Finally, in the Handy markets, the shipbroker mentioned that "we experienced a firming market in the Atlantic this week. Chrts looking for prompt ships able to cover their end November stems have to pay up as the tonnage list is scares. Trips from USG to Continent are now paying in excess of USD 22k. In the Pacific we see rates increasing as well. The Indonesian imposed ban on nickel ore and bauxite exports have boosted the shipments of same. Smaxes able same can achieve above 20k for trips to China bss Spore delivery. On the back of this rate hike the period market has regained activity. Short periods trading in the 13k´s and-year deals in the 12 ´s", Fearnleys concluded.
