DRY BULK MARKET STILL LACKLUSTRE, DESPITE PROJECTIONS OF A NEW RALLY - NIKOS ROUSSANOGLOU, HELLENIC SHIPPING NEWS
We might still be about six weeks far from the end of the year, but the projected by many analysts upcoming rally of the dry bulk market, hasn't yet arrived. As a result, the Baltic Dry Index (BDI), the industry's benchmark was once again lacking support, ending yesterday at 1,499 points, down by 28 points. Capesizes are still struggling for higher ground, with the Baltic Capesize Index (BCI) down by 64 points on the day at 2,447. Panamaxes were unchanged over the previous session, while smaller ship types witnessed some kind of positive support and were a bit higher on the day.
According to the latest weekly report from shipbroker Fearnleys on the capesize market, it was noted that "triggered by healthy far east demand and improving FFA levels - and nothing else - the downward trend has turned into notable spot and period improvement. Due to sudden need for early loaders on the WAust/China ore trade, values of Far East rounds have jumped almost 10% to come in at usd 19k. Although at smaller scale, a similar situation for pacific coal trades has contributed to stop a negative spiral and maintain average earnings flat at just under usd 19k w-o-w. Atlantic is best described as uncertain, and increased cargo volume in this area is badly needed for any further general improvement to happen. Although little actually concluded, period levels are up on average some usd 750/day on back of paper improvement" it said.
Meanwhile, on the Panamax front, Fearnleys noted that "the Panamax rates dropped in both hemispheres this week. With a slow demand and vessels being ballasted from Pacific into the USG, rates continue to drop for December loading. Spot rates at around USD 50pmt for USG/China vs a January stem being fixed at USD 46pmt this week shows little faith in Q1. Although FFA values are trading up at time of writing, it would seem this is a consequence of the bigger Capes experiencing a firming tendency. TA´s are now being fixed in region of 10/11k depending on delivery while Pac rounds are being fixed in the 9´s. The period market is more or less none existing although one LME got fixed for 1 year at USD 11,300 for Feast delivery".
Finally, on the Handy markets, Fearnleys said that "the Atlantic market experienced a general rate increase for most trades this week. More cargoes in the market and chrts looking for prompt tonnage to cover their USG loadings had a tough time getting cvrd. In the eastern hemisphere the rates have remained firm this week. Supported by large volume on Indo nickel ore and bauxite, rates have been reported at around USD 17/18k levels. The bauxite trade is largely affected by the new export tax being implemented in 2014 which will most likely slow down the volume for same. Indo/India runs are being rated in the mid teens by ships open N.China and same levels for NoPac rounds. Short periods are being fixed in region of USD 12-13k", it concluded.
Meanwhile, in the newbuilding market, Clarkson Hellas said that "there were further orders to report this week in the VLOC market, with it coming to light that Henghou Industries have contracted two further vessels in a series of 250,000 DWT ore carriers at Guangzhou Longxue. Pricing remains undisclosed, however delivery of these latest vessels is planned for 2016 and takes the total series to four firm. Knightsbridge Tankers are reported to have placed an order for two firm 180,000 DWT Capesize at Daehan Shipbuilding, with delivery of both vessels planned for 2015. In the smaller sizes, it is understood that Shih Wei Navigation have contracted a single 60,000 DWT Supramax bulk carrier at Onomichi in Japan. Delivery is planned for mid-2016 with pricing in the region USD 29 million.
Limited ordering to report in the tanker market this week, with a single contract for one firm plus one option 50,000 DWT Jones Act Product Tankers from Seabulk International at General Dynamics NASSCO. The vessels will be built ready for conversion to using LNG as a fuel, with the first due to deliver at the very end of 2016 and second vessel in 2017.
In the gas market, BW Gas have declared options for the fifth and sixth in a series of 84,000 CBM LPG carriers at HHI, with delivery of both vessels understood to be for mid-2016. A relatively quiet week also in the container market with just one order to report. Cape Shipping have contracted two firm 6,900 TEU container carriers at Hanjin Subic, with delivery of the first vessel in mid-2015. In other sectors, Hoegh Autoliners have declared further options for 8,500 unit PCTCs at Xiamen. These latest orders take the series to six firm vessels with delivery planned for the first quarter of 2016".
