HANDY: PERIOD MARKET STAND IN GOOD POSITION - FEARNRESEARCH

Nickel ore and Bauxite was active last week but slowed down now due to Chinese holidays. Ships opened in North China fixed at US$ 11-13k levels to India and same to China. Nopac round traded mid 14k. There is less Iron ore from India area but still achieved US$ 9-10k dop for trip to China. S. Africa and WCI remained quiet however those able to trade Iran are fixed around US$ 16-17k and over US$ 20k for vessels open in PG. Period market stand in good position, owners are talking 4/6 months around US$ 11k but charterers are looking for eco candidates with softer number.
Panamax
After recent weeks rally in both hemispheres, we experienced a slowdown end of last week. With the Chinese away for holidays this week several players expected that the market would come off and we did experience a correction to the market with volumes of concluded business going down. But a clear market direction was not to be seen until today. Fresh cargoes have entered the market both in the Feast and in the Atlantic and we especially see more coal cargoes from USG and USEC for October dates - Rates have again started to climb. Tarvs are now being paid around US$ 15/17k depending on duration and redelivery while Pac rounds are fixing around the same levels. FFA values are again giving support to the period market and 1 year deals being concluded in region of US$ 12/13k for far east delivery. We do expect the market to keep this strong for the remaining week much supported by the demand in the Atlantic basin.
Capesize
After a couple of weeks with continuously increasing rates, a correction was bound to come, and it happened. However, in spite of lower rates the sentiment remains strong and FFA values are positive. On this basis, it is expected rates to pick up after the holidays in the east which makes most owners hesitant to fix this week. West Australia has dropped by almost US$ 2, but has found a floor around US$ 12. Front haul business has been more or less non existing since Vales last rush end of last week, but there is certainly expected Vale have more up their sleeves. Transatlantic round voyage is keeping steady, with relatively tight balance of ships on the continent.
