BDI STRENGTHENS FURTHER AS CAPESIZE FREIGHT RATES JUMP - CAPT. REDDY
COALspot.com: The freight market continued its upward trend and maintaining the moment with BDI and Cape index up by 16 pct week on week. The Capesize charter rates (spot ) peaked to US$ 37,000 per day, and the Panamax spot charter rates in the pacific was at around US$ 14,000 per day.
The BDI was up by 16.38 percent and closed at 1904 points and the Cape index also was up by 16.16 percent closed at 4018 points on 20 September 2013.
The Panamax index continued to be firm and up 11.25 percent week on week and closed at 1,453 points. The supramax and Handy size vessels were slightly up by 2.50 pct closing at 964 points and 558 points respectively.
There was hectic period activity with several Cape fixtures reported around US$ 23,000 per day and Panamax fixtures for the period around US$ 11,000-12,000 per day.
"The freight rate from Indonesia to India was firm and most owners preferring to fix period rates. The freight market expected to be remain firm for next few weeks as there does not seem to slow down of iron ore imports even though the iron prices are softening", said Capt. Reddy, Managing Director of Solym Singapore Pte Ltd.,
The average charter for Cape at US$ 37,443 per day , Panamax at US$ 11,551 per day , Supramax at US$ 10,075 per day and Handy size at US$ 7,943 per day.
The futures for three years (2014-2016) for Cape at US$ 19,000 per day, Panamax at around US$ 11,000 per day, Supramax at US$ 10,500 per day , Handy size at US$ 9,000 per day.
The supramax index in the far east (S8 route) was up by 4.75 pct and closed at US$ 9,889 per day (last week US$ 9440 per day). The route S7 was at same levels closed at US$ 7,875 per day (Last week US$ 7875 per day) . The freight market in this sector is expected to be firm next week.
The Brent crude oil price was slightly down by 3.15 pct and closed at US$ 109.22 per barrel (last week US$ 112.78 per barrel). The bunker prices also closed lower at US$ 607.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex-Singapore on 20th Sept 2013).
