CAPE FREIGHT RATES RISE ON HIGH DEMAND AND TIGHT AVAILABILITY - CAPT. REDDY
COALspot.com : The BDI, Cape and Panamax indices are continued to rise and saw a steep surge with average index in these segments up around 25 pct week on week. The BDI was up 21 pct on week and closed at 1636 points on 13 September. The cape index was also gained 23.11 pct on week and closed at 3446 points week ended 13 September 2013.
The Panamax saw the biggest gain this week. The panamax index up 28.04 pct and closed at 1306 points week on week. However, the supramax index was slightly down, fell 1.98 pct and closed at 940 points week ended 13 September 2013. The Handy size index was up by 1.30 pct and closed at 544 points week on week.
Since 1st August the BDI has gone up by about 53 pct ,Cape index up by 78 pct,, Panamax index up by 25 pct while the Supramax and handy size index was up only by about 3 pct.
The Cape size charter rates continued to rise with average spot charter rates are now at around US$ 30,000 per day, Quite few charterers were looking to convert Cape cargoes into panamax parcel due to tightness on availability of capes and firm charter rates, this combined with grain season saw the Panamax index up by 28 pct . The charter rates for Cape and Panamax is expected to be firm as some reports suggest that the iron ore shipments to China would be steady even though the prices of are down.
The freight rates from Indonesia to India would be expected to be firm next week on all the segments (ex. Cape/Panamax/Supramax).
The average charter rates was at Cape/US$ 29,609 per day , Panamax/US$ 10,474 per day , Supramax/US$ 9,831 per day and Handy size/US$ 7,771 per day.
The futures for three years (2014-2016) was at around Cape/US$ 19,000 per day, Panamax/US$ 10,500 per day, Supramax/US$ 10,500 per day , Handy size/US$ 9,000 per day.
The supramax index in the far east (S8 route) was up by 5.31 pct and closed at US$ 9,440 per day (last week US$ 8,964 per day) .The route S7 was at same levels compared to same period last week. However, the freight market in this sector is expected to be firm next week.
The Brent crude oil prices was slightly down or fell 2.15 pct week on week and closed at US$ 112.78 per barrel (last week US$ 115.26 per barrel). The bunker prices also closed lower at US$ 598.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 13th Sept 2013).
