HANDY : INDO/CHINA, CHARTERERS RATING AROUND US$ 10,000 - FEARNLEYS AS
Handy
The Feast market firmed slightly up as mid-July cargos entered the market, but charterers seems not in hurry to cover them and looking for cheap ballasters. Vessels open Singapore talking around 13k for Indo/India biz. For Indo/China, charterers rating around 10k. Short period vessels open N.China were fixed at USD 11k. Any vessels open in WCI-MEG range low activity forcing rates down to low USD 7k for trip to China, otherwise owners try reposition into MEG at rate around USD 8k and close to USD 9k+30k GBB for APS Durban.
Panamax
Following the recent firm tendency, a series of fresh requirements early week did not prevent a toppish feeling in the Atlantic with rounds hovering from 10k up to 12k depending on direction and duration. However, some hot pockets on the Continent for Baltic rounds or trips out have given a nice premium to Owners with fronthaul fixtures well above 15k. ECSA rounds fairly stable at 15k+500 BB, with some charterers sidelined expecting a falling trend. In the Eastern Hemisphere there is an underlying weak tendency, low on activity where owners fail to see much fresh business despite talks about iron ore stock piling in China. Some Aussie- and Indo rounds are reported in the 6k+ area. Otherwise long hauls via ECSA still being the predominate trade. A few short period fixtures concluded from 7k to 8k depending on vessel spec´s and position.
Capesize
Following 16 consecutive days of firming rates, it appears we have seen the top of this short term spike, with the 4TC number falling USD 1582 over the last two days to end at USD 13363 at the time of writing. Whilst significantly better than the YTD average of USD 6288, rates have softened on all fronts with the C5 West Australia index now marked at USD 7.75 representing a loss of about 50 cents week on week. Activity in the Atlantic seems to have slowed slightly, with a TA RV fixed at 14k/day on the day of writing, notably lower than last week´s TA fixtures. Sentiment for Q3 looks a little more bearish, with August and September FFA contracts having lost about 2k in value w-o-w, as some are skeptical about long haul ore demand over the coming months. However, whilst the market appears to have topped out for now there have been a number of good period deals concluded the past week, with talk of a solid 18k+/day achieved for a three-year period deal on a Newcastlemax.
