DRY BULK CARRIERS DOMINATE NEWBUILDING ORDERS AS SHIP OWNERS ARE ENCOURAGED BY LATEST FREIGHT RATE RALLY - NIKOS ROUSSANOGLOU, HELLENIC SHIPPING NEWS
Newbuilding orders for dry bulk carriers were already high, compared to last year, prior to the latest rally of the Baltic Dry Index (BDI), which has seen the index rising close to 1,100 points. As such, it was only natural that ever more orders for bulkers would pour in, now that the market has bounced back. According to the latest weekly report from shipbroker Clarkson Hellas, further to last week's report, "of clients of Golden Ocean placing an order for three firm plus three option Ultramax at Chengxi, we understand that Wah Kwong have declared four further options for SDARI design 64,000 DWT Ultramax at Chengxi making a total order of eight firm vessels. Delivery of these options is spread between end 2015 and early 2016. It was also reported this week that Clients of Sammok Shipping have placed an order for two firm plus two option 64,000 DWT Ultramax at New Times, with delivery of the firm vessels understood to be in the second half of 2015 and options in 2016.
This week has seen a further four firm plus four option of the SDARI 64,000 DWT design at Jiangsu Hantong. This order placed by Conti Reederei was reportedly priced at USD 24.5 Mill per vessel with delivery of all firm vessels in the first half of 2015 and options in 2015 if declared. Also in China, Marine Capital (MCL) are reported this week to have placed an order for two firm plus a total of two option Crown 63 Ultramax at Sinopacific. Understood to have been signed earlier this year, the vessels are to be built at Sinopacific’s Dayang facility with delivery from the second half of 2014. Also at Dayang, GSD Marin are reported to have declared an option for Crown 63, making a total of two firm vessels both for delivery in 2014.
In the same sector, it is also understood that Oshima SB has received an order for two firm 60,000 DWT Ultramax placed by DACC Maritime, a joint venture between D’Amico and Coeclerici. Pricing remains undisclosed, however delivery is understood to be planned for September and December 2015 for the firm vessels and 2016 for the options if declared. Finally in dry, it was reported that Nisshin Shipping has placed an order for four firm 39,000 DWT Handysize at Jiangmen Nanyang. Pricing for this deal is in the region USD 22 Mill with delivery of all vessels in 2015", Clarkson Hellas noted on the dry bulk market ordering activity.
Meanwhile, in a separate report, Piraeus-based shipbroker Golden Destiny noted that "in the newbuilding market, significant volume of business is being reported for bulk carriers and containers, with none reported activity for tankers and only 3 new contracts in the gas tanker segment for LPG carriers. Chinese shipyards appeared to have won the new business contracted in the bulk carrier segment, while South Korean yards sealed orders for large LPG carriers and post panamax containerships.
Overall, the week closed with 53 fresh orders reported worldwide at a total deadweight of 2,828,000 tons, posting 61% week-onweek increase from previous week, with bulk carriers holding 51% share of the total volume of new orders, gas tankers 5.6%, containers 17% and special projects 26.4%. This week’s total newbuilding business is down by 3.6% from similar week’s closing in 2012, when 55 fresh orders had been reported, 5 bulkers, 6 tankers, 1 gas tanker, 13 containers and 30 special projects. In terms of invested capital, the total amount of money invested is difficult to be estimated with accuracy as the contract price has not been revealed for 31 transactions. A hefty amount of money is invested in the offshore, bulk carrier and container segments for 27, 9 and 14 new contracts respectively. Compared with previous week’s levels, large increase in the volume of new orders is recorded in the container segment, 125% against 69% week-on-week increase in the bulk carrier segment", Golden Destiny said.
It added that "in the gas tanker segment, Norway’s LPG shipping specialist Solvang ordered two large LPG carriers of 60,000cbm at South Korean yard Hyundai’s Heavy Industries for delivery in the first quarter of 2015. The newbuilding cost believed to be in the region of $72mil each. In the small LPG segment, Georgas of Switzerland ordered one 5,000cbm carrier at Japan’s Murakimi Shipyard at an undisclosed contract price for delivery in 2015.
In the LNG segment, Malaysian carrier MISC is planning to expand its LNG fleet by about eight new carriers, all to be secured with long-term charter agreements with PETRONAS. The Malaysian carrier is negotiating with South Korean shipbuilders, they said, citing limited capacity in Japanese yards. The contracts are expected to be signed this year.
In the container segment, Chinese yards are in the course of a new scheme of building mega boxships to compete with South Korean. Sources suggest that French carrier CMA CGM is under plans to proceed with the construction of nine 16,000 TEU boxships with China State Shipbuilding Corp’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding p via building and leasing deal.
South Korean shipbuilder, Hyundai Heavy Industries secured new business from Greek and German shipping players for post panamax vessels. Greece’s Oceanbulk Maritime placed an order for two 9,200 TEU boxships, with an option of two more, for delivery in 2015 at a newbuilding cost of about $83mil each. In addition, German’s Hamburg Sud ordered three 9,000TEU boxships for delivery in 2014 at a newbuilding cost in the region of $81-$84mil each. In the sub-panamax segment, Lomar Shipping of Greece ordered one 2,200 TEU boxship at China’s Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard for delivery in 2014 at a newbuilding cost of about $25mil. In the offshore segment, Chinese yard Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding’s offshore units has won its first order for the construction of two platform supply vessels from an undisclosed Singaporean owner, with an option for two more", the shipbroker concluded.
