CAPESIZE : FINALLY A SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENT IN RATES! - FEARNLEYS A.S

Atlantic market kept a steady curve from last week. US Gulf positions fetched tick above USD 21k for Cont/Skaw direction, and vessels fixed for direction US Gulf were only paid USD 4k. Fronthauls ex Cont fixed close to USD 14k. Feast market was fairly quiet but started to pick up Tuesday. Few Indo/India and Indo/S.China coal orders in the market running spot. Passing Singapore Supras trading at USD 11-12k. For Nopac rounds vessels have been fixed at mid USD 8k. For ships open S.China owners aiming USD 9.5k for short period. For trips to W.Africa vessels open N.China/ Korea can get around USD 6k. Tonnage situation in South Africa is tight, vessel ballast down from India to get biz. Inter MEG/India able to achieve USD 8k.
Panamax
Last week we pointed out that the floor was found after several weeks of declining rates in both hemispheres. This week we saw an upturn in rates with fresh cargoes entering the market. Increased activity out of the USG and USEC with fresh coal cargoes causes rates to increase as the Northern part of Atlantic is tight for tonnage. The Fhaul market has improved somewhat and at time of writing (14500+450 GBB lvl) but still excess of 290 Panamaxes outside ECSA who will end back in the Pacific late summer. In the Pacific we see a marginal increase in rates with only limited improvements in activity. We believe the recent increase in rates is partly caused by tonnage being tied up for long voyages after the peak in grain season out of ECSA. Pac rounds are now being fixed at around USD 6250 which is a 12% increase w-o-w. The period market has also picked up a bit of activity with owners willing to give optional periods able to secure employment.
Capesize
Finally a substantial improvement in rates! The Atlantic has turned, with rates presently in excess of USD 10,000. In the Pacific low teens are being fixed for good ships. Tubarao/Qingdao on voyage are presently in the upper USD 18s pmt, with talks one fixture at USD 20 pmt! Optimism prevails and the present push seems well supported, in strong contrast to the market we have experienced over the past months.
