DRY BULK MARKET KEEPS ON RISING MOMENTUM - NIKOS ROUSSANOGLOU, HELLENIC SHIPPING NEWS
The dry bulk market has maintained its rising momentum, on the back of increased cargo availability. According to yesterday's figures, the industry's benchmark, the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) was up by 10 points, reaching a total of 875 points. Capesizes were unchanged yesterday, as the relative Capesize Index was steady at 1,314 points. Still, the Capesize market gained an impressive 11 percent just in one day, during Tuesday. This was the biggest single day gain since mid-January. During yesterday's session, the Supramax segment was the strongest, posting a daily gain of 14 points, to reach 903 points in total. Panamaxes also gained to reached 1,138 points, while slight gains of four points were also in store for the smaller dry bulk carriers (Handysize-Handymax).
According to the latest weekly report from shipbroker Fearnleys, in the Capesize market "some optimism surfacing as west Australia activity was picking up with increased demand for earlier ships. However as the end of the week approached, the optimism was vanishing as west Australian shippers turned quiet. Front haul activity remains dull, with Vale still being out of the game. Period rates have remained stable, with short period rates close to $10,000 a day.
Fearnleys went on to mention that "the Panamax segment has experienced a good period lately thanks to the grain season in S.Am soaking up vsls from both the Pacific and Atlantic.
This has led to up to 25 days congestion in several of the main grain ports in the area, and now shippers ask the operators to delay their shipments a bit to take away some of the piled up ships, which resulted in a calmer market. We see many ships open in F.East that has started their ballast towards ECSA, all hoping to repeat or beat last done. Though now there is some uncertainty in the market and many doubts the rates can continue the climb. At the same time we hear some good news from the Pacific coal market as Indonesia is lowering their prices a bit to compete against Chinese inland coal. This might lead to better coal activity in this area. Currently Pacific rounds pay arnd USD 10k. The Atlantic is pretty quiet but slowly improving; TA rounds pay around 10k. The long period market has been quiet lately; 1 yr period pay around USD 9k" the shipbroker noted.
Finally, in the Handy front, Fearnleys noted that "the Indian market is still quiet in respect of export of iron ore. WC India market has improved with a few stems out of the MEG, WC India opening vessels are seeing around 9000-10,000 for trip to India via MEG. For Indo-India trip Supra rate is around 10,000 bss south China and 9500 bss CJK range, and around 9000 for short period. Spmx freight rate from Red Sea/India is around mid teens" it concluded.
In a quote from Arctic Securites, featured in a Bloomberg story this week, "an increase in coal shipments from Colombia, after miners at BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP)’s Cerrejon coal venture ended a 32-day strike this week, “will be positive for Capes as it will likely push fixing activity up”. In a similar note, Galbraith's noted that record steel production in China during February also indicates strong demand for iron ore. The shipbroker added that “acombination of a slight drop in iron ore prices and improved weather/availability from Western Australia is allowing Chinese iron ore imports and thus Cape rates to return to slightly higher levels. “A couple of longer haul fixtures from Brazil and Suldanha Bay and the resumption of Western Australia fixtures to Qingdao will have supported the recent tick up in Cape rates”, it concluded.
