HANDY : THE PACIFIC MARKET GOT FIRMED UP AS CHINESE CAME BACK FROM HOLIDAYS - FEARNLEYS

The Atlantic saw more cargoes than last week but rates remained unchanged as lot of ships in the market. The USG-Feast was at USD 18k and Black Sea-Feast was at USD 11k. The Pacific market got firmed up as Chinese came back from holidays. Indo-India now been reported at healthy levels at USD 7k dop South China. WCI-China and ECI-China was quiet and rates were USD 7k and 6k, respectively. RBCT rounds fixed at USD 9k + 300k BB. Short period rate for large eco Supra was around USD 9500.
Panamax
Last week ended with some strong fixtures for coal and ore in Atlantic for prompt dates. Good flow of cargoes consequently charterers had to pay up 2-3 USD pmt in order to secure tonnage. This continued beginning of this week especially for early and middle March dates. With China and Singapore back the activity level was significant up this week. T/a round voyages now paying around 7400/7500. And some orders still circulated showing there is not easy to secure tonnage. Fronthaul´s in the region of 13800/14000. Pacific rounds also increased to 7500 per day, similar as Atlantic. Some short periods reported at 8500-9000 which is up from high 7000. All in all more positive signals, but fear it will be short lived as the new building´s continue to pop out from the yards.
Capesize
With volume concerns in East Coast Australia, and the Columbian strike continuing to have an impact on volume for transatlantic routes, rates continue to fall. Fronthaul fixtures remain slow and are adding to owners woes, with Tubuaro/China at around USD 18 pmt. By far the most actively fixed route this week has been West Australia/China run, with the big Aussie miners all taking ships at mid 7´s for end Feb-early March positions as the price of iron ore continues its strong rally. At present, the rate for this route remains at mid 7´s. Whilst this has eased the tonnage surplus in the Pacific, tonnage in the Atlantic basin continues to grow and at present, the spot 4TC rate is at a painfully low USD 5,562 per day. One would hope this will improve slightly on the back of increased cargo volume in the coming weeks.
