DRY BULK MARKET FALLS ON TROPICAL CYCLONE - NIKOS ROUSSANOGLOU, HELLENIC SHIPPING NEWS
The dry bulk market has been on the downside during the past couple of days, mainly as a result of the tropical storm which forced ports to close down in Australia, the largest exporter of iron ore. As a result, cargo demand was absent yesterday, leading rates down. The Baltic Dry Index, the industry's main benchmark was down by 1 percent to 817, while rates for the larger in size Capesize vessel-type, used to transport iron ore, were down by 2.7% to $8,431.
According to the latest report from shipbroker Fearnleys, in the Capesize segment, "weather issues literally clouding the skies in Far East, with main Australian mineral loading ports closed down. Spot volumes consequently decline on the fundamental W.Aust/China trade, whilst freight rates have so far held up due to support from strong Atlantic activity. Increased spot exports from Brazil combined with generally improved atlantic supply/demand balance has resulted in daily earnings for transtlantic and fronthaul trades are up some 35% respectively 8% w-o-w. Paper fluctuations have allowed for considerable period activity, including 2 x 180000 dwt/built 2011-12 delivering china prompt for 8-12 months at around usd 10800 and 170000 dwt/built 2000 delivering China prompt reportedly done for 8-12 months at a massive usd 11250" the shipbroker said.
Regarding the panamax market, Fearnleys added that "it has been fairly balanced all over the last week. Activity seems to come down a little bit in the atlantic, but levels remain basically unchanged. A normal trans Atlantic round is paying around usd 7-7500 daily. While we have seen several fixtures done in more specialized trades that requires INL breaching and/or ice class tonnage that pays quite a bit more. The fronthaul market is pretty silent, we do not see as many usg/ china grain cargoes in market that you normally would expect at this time of the year. And the east coast South America grain has been more quiet than the previous two weeks. Fronthaul out of ecsa now pays arnd 14000+400k bb, but varies very much with vessel specifications. In the pacific it seems that charterers are still in charge as the pacific index is at low levels arnd USD 4000. Also the period market has been pretty silent the last week. Levels remain low and varies between 7-9000 depending vessel type for one or two years period" the report said.
Finally, on the Handy front, the shipbroker noted that "the Atlantic market remains stable as supply of tonnage is still in excess of demand. USG- Feast fixed at usd 18k and CONT-FEAST at usd 11k. Pacific mkt has started falling as too many ships are in the market and no cargoes. Indo-india now at APS USD 8k + BB USD 90000. Nopac also fixed on APS at usd 7k+ 300000. South africa rounds now APS at usd 9k +300000. Short period rates for large eco supra at usd 8500" Fearnleys concluded.
In a separate report, Shiptrade & Services stated on the Supramax front that "it was another positive week for the Atlantic market with ECSA leading the way on high volumes, taking advantage the shortage of prompt loaders in the area. Supras are being fixed at USD low teens + USD 250k BB for trips to FEast, whereas from the USG to FEast are expected to get high teens, and for trips within the Atlantic mid to high teens. On the other hand, low activity has been observed at the Continent with owners accepting low rates to take advantage of the reposition.
The Pacific market had another inactive week with Indo coal being fixed at around USD 8,500 – 9,000 passing Spore redelivery ECIndia and around USD 8,000 redelivery China. In addition, there is strong tendency from charterers’ side for aps deliveries. NOPAC rounds are still not very active but some requirements were seen and ratewise talking around USD 6,500 + 350/400k BB. Some interest from charterers has been observed for short period and rates are around USD 8,500 – 9,000 depending on size and delivery point.
